The Innovation Radar is an initiative of the European Commission (EC) designed to identify groundbreaking innovations and visionary innovators involved in EU-funded research and innovation projects. This data-driven tool dives deep into EU projects, identifying high-potential innovations, pinpointing the organizations behind them and assessing their readiness to enter the market. Its ultimate goal is to make the remarkable innovations supported by EU funding more accessible to citizens, businesses and policymakers, showcasing the next generation of innovators who, like many successful companies, started with EU support. By promoting transparency and providing access to information, the Innovation Radar plays a crucial role in fostering a vibrant ecosystem of incubators, entrepreneurs, investors and funding agencies, all working together to bring EU-backed novelties to market faster.
The platform’s insights are drawn from data collected by independent experts who review ongoing projects funded through programs like Horizon Europe, Horizon 2020, and LIFE Programme, among others. They assess the market potential of the innovative technologies, products, services or methodologies that are being developed and provide an unbiased evaluation of their commercial readiness in a structured report.
To achieve the endorsement by the Innovation Radar, projects go through a careful assessment based on specific information gathered through a questionnaire, completed by an independent innovation expert appointed by the EC, with the active input from the project consortium. Following an in-depth review of the project’s deliverables, outcomes and results, the expert identifies the key innovations stemming from the project. Essential details about these innovations and their market potential are also collected during an interview with consortium representatives, typically held during the project review meetings. The collected information is processed through a methodology developed by the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission.
