Dr. Stefan Meyer

General Manager of the German Association of Fish Processing and Wholesale

"Seafood traceability is the basis for trust and better management from fisheries to market"

Dr. Stefan Meyer is General Manager of the German Association of Fish Processing and Wholesale (Bundesverband der Deutschen Fischindustrie und des Fischgroßhandels e.V.), the central industry association representing fish processors, importers, wholesalers, and trading companies along the German seafood value chain. The association’s 130+ member companies cover a wide range of activities, from primary processing and value added production to international trade and distribution, and collectively form the backbone of Germany’s seafood supply for retail, food service, and out of home consumption markets. As such, the association plays a key role in representing one of Europe’s largest and most diverse seafood markets, which is strongly integrated into global sourcing and international trade flows.

Germany’s seafood sector is characterized by a high degree of regulatory complexity, strong import dependency, and close interaction with European and international food law, fisheries management, sustainability standards, and trade policy. In this environment, Dr. Meyer leads the association’s strategic positioning and policy work, representing the interests of the German seafood industry vis à vis national authorities, European institutions, and international partner organizations. His work focuses in particular on food law and market regulation, sustainability requirements, fisheries control, labelling, and trade related issues affecting processed seafood and imported fishery products.

Dr. Meyer holds a PhD in marine biology and has built his professional career at the interface of science, applied research, industry practice, and policy making. Before joining the association, he worked in fisheries and aquaculture research, innovation projects, and cluster management, coordinating large stakeholder networks and supporting technology driven development in the bioeconomy and marine sector. This background enables him to translate scientific and technical knowledge into regulatory and economic contexts and to act as a bridge between industry realities and policy objectives.

In addition to his national role, Dr. Meyer is actively involved in European committees, advisory councils, and industry working groups, where he contributes to discussions on EU level regulation and market developments. In these forums, he represents the perspective of the processing and trading sector and works to ensure that regulatory frameworks are practicable, proportionate, and aligned with real world supply chains. His role is deliberately positioned at the interface between industry and regulation, aiming to support a competitive, sustainable, and legally compliant seafood sector in Germany and across Europe.
