On May 13th 2025, WWF Portugal, representing the Sea2See project, joined the interdisciplinary event “Oceans, History, Sustainability and Innovation: Setúbal and the Gastronomy of the Future” at the School of Hospitality and Tourism of Setúbal. The initiative brought together students from Culinary and Bakery Management courses to explore how sustainability and innovation can shape the future of gastronomy, particularly in a coastal country like Portugal, where the ocean plays a central role in culture, economy, and cuisine.

The Sea2See framework provided a meaningful context for the session, which focused on the importance of sustainable fisheries, seafood traceability, labeling, and the diversification of marine ingredients. Through interactive activities – including project’s vídeos an a quiz designed to spark critical thinking -, students were invited to reflect on the environmental impact of their choices and the role they can play in promoting responsible seafood consumption.

The Sea2See MOOC was also introduced as a valuable resource for deepening knowledge and supporting professional development. Designed to be accessible and science-based, the course offers tools and insights for educators, students, and professionals across Europe who are committed to integrating sustainability into their work.

This engagement exemplifies Sea2See’s commitment to empowering future generations through education and collaboration. By connecting scientific knowledge, technological innovation, the active involvement of environmental NGOs and the strength of European cooperation, the project continues to foster a shared understanding of ocean sustainability, reaching beyond borders and into classrooms, kitchens, and communities.

A few days after, to mark the European Maritime Day, the School of Hospitality and Tourism of Setúbal held a thematic lunch where students applied the concepts explored during the Sea2See session to create sustainable seafood dishes. It was a moment of celebration and practical learning, reinforcing the project’s mission to bring ocean literacy from theory to practice.
