NAVIGATING THE SEA TO PLATE JOURNEY FOR RESPONSIBLE SEAFOOD CONSUMPTION

SEA2SEE partners are thrilled with the successful launch of the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) developed during the past 8 months as part of the project’s consumer engagement strategy.  It plays a pivotal role in addressing a significant barrier identified during the delivery of the participatory workshops in all the countries – the lack of seafood literacy in society. The leading objective of the online course is to empower consumers and stakeholders with knowledge, driving responsible consumption and sustainable production practices in the seafood industry. Another accomplishment it aims at is to raise awareness on the seafood value chain thus enabling a better understanding of consumption and highlighting the importance of digital traceability in the quest for preserving our ocean resources.

The content of the MOOC equips participants with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions and offers guidelines for responsible seafood buying. It is structured in 5 learning modules focusing on different topics and providing comprehensive information on fishing methods, aquaculture processes, seafood traceability and more.

The enlightening learning experience is brought to participants through recorded presentations and video capsules, enforced with additional support materials like summaries, recommended readings, animated videos and infographics.

A valuable feature of the MOOC is the Open Forum where participants can chat and exchange ideas or contacts, or where they can pose questions about the learning modules. Ideally, students can follow the course at their own pace. However, once enrolled, they have a fixed time to complete it.

Following this first release of the MOOC, 3 more editions are expected throughout the lifespan of the project, each lasting 2 months, with educational materials revised and updated based on the feedback received by the teachers and students.

The primary audience of the SEA2SEE open online course is consumers and stakeholders in the last part of the seafood value chain, such as market owners, fishmongers, chefs, restaurant owners, food bloggers and influencers, and supermarket representatives. Educators and teachers can also find added value in taking the course, as it can provide them with helpful resources to enhance classroom experience and other non-formal educational contexts.

Enrolling in the MOOC brings an immediate confidence boost for learning something new and gets participants some perks for a sense of self-fulfillment!

  • Certificates of Completion – participants who successfully complete the course will receive a digital certificate signed by the SEA2SEE consortium. The certificate serves as a credential to showcase their newfound knowledge and skills in seafood literacy
  • Access to Exclusive Content – downloadable high-resolution resources
  • Community Engagement and Networking Opportunities – participants join a vibrant online community where they can interact with experts in the seafood industry and fellow learners. They can connect practitioners, and peers in the seafood industry, facilitating knowledge exchange and potential collaborations.
  • Prizes and Giveaways – at the end of each edition of the MOOC, a prize raffle will be organized within the pool of participants who have received a certificate of completion. The SEA2SEE team decides upon the terms and conditions of each raffle. Examples of prizes are a printed edition of the SEAstainable Kitchen Notebook, a kitchen set, a seafood book, a cooking experience
  • Success Stories – participants are encouraged to be active and share their success stories in the course discussion forum. Select stories may be featured as success stories and testimonials in the future editions of the MOOC. Such a recognition brings visibility to local realities committed to seafood sustainability and helps inspire new stakeholders to play an active role.
